Introduction

Diabetes is a serious global threat that is outpacing our healthcare system’s ability to provide adequate care to those in need. Peers for Progress was founded in 2006 to facilitate the awareness, education and training in peer support to address management of the growing, worldwide diabetes epidemic.

To improve long-term outcomes in diabetes, sustained individual behavior changes are necessary. These changes can be supported through programs that incorporate peer-to-peer interactions, mentoring and role-modeling. Development of peer-education systems and rigorous scientific testing of the concept have been long awaited by the patient and medical community and are at the core of the Peers for Progress program.

Peers for Progress is built on three key functions of peer support:

  1. Assistance and consultation in applying a management plan for daily life
  2. Social and emotional support
  3. Linkage to clinical care — including connections with Family Medicine, primary care and the Patient-centered Medical Home.

Our Mission

To evaluate, demonstrate and promote peer support for diabetes management around the world.
